![]() ![]() I have found the AF's quirks to be only minimally bothersome. It's right for my hand, the lenses are fabulous, and the camera is robust and portable (at least compared to other MF cameras.) CHeck my portfolio it was largely produced with this equipment. The Contax 645 is the best camera system I've ever used. I shoot with this in weddings and will use it as long as my customers demand film. Impressive given the weight of these superbly built lenses. The AF speed isn't blazingly fast, but certainly faster than some consumer level screwdriver lenses in 35mm. Its compromises in the AF area shouldn't deter you from getting one (its status as being discontinued however may.) In good light and during non-action shots, the AF should be adequate, including candid and social events. Simply put, the camera doesn't get in the way of your work. And you shouldn't expect AF-S lenses' AF speed because of all that heavy glass required in medium format.ĭespite all that being said, the C645 has excellent ergonomics in its AF design so you can leave it as MF, and have instant AF assist, or leave it as AF and occasionally manual override it. And its low light ability isn't the best. The AF system on the Contax 645 is ancient compared to what you'll find in F100/F5/F6 or any of the D1- or D2-series SLRs (in Nikon, don't know about Canon.) You get 1 sensor, instead of multiple, and that sensor isn't the cross type so it will only detect contrast in one orientation. ![]()
